Now that the start of the Transat Jacque Vabre is getting closer (only 10 days) more and more Open60s are being shown using their new foils. Now we can have a look at Jean-Pierre Dick / Fabien Delahaye boat, a serious candidate to victory with two great sailors aboard. Everybody knows Jean-Pierre Dick but Fabien Delahaye is not so well known, a kid from the new generation with already a big list of accomplishments. Looking only at victories: 1st Transat Jacques Vabre (Class40 - 2013), 1st Tour de France (2012), 2012 French champion crewed offshore racing, 2011 Champion of France Solo Offshore, Winner of the Transat AG2R La Mondiale (with Armel Le Cléac’h - 2010). Their boat looks good and even with moderate wind the first 1/3 of the boat sails out of the water for considerable periods: 
Also a look at some great images from"Le souffle du Nord", Thomas Ruyant / Adrien Hardy Open60, one without the new foils and even if with two great sailors from the new generation (with many victories on smaller ocean classes) I dont believe the 2007 sailboat will allow them any chance to win. Thats right, on many offshore races a top 2007 boat is still a boat to be considered for victory, here is just a 2 generations older boat, considerably slower then the new ones or even than the ones from the last generation. That is a measure of the speed of boat development and improvements on design on this class. Compare that with the Volvo racers where the boats from the previous generation where faster then the new ones.

Boat Plans Butler | ARMEL ON FOILS ON THE NEXT VENDEE GLOBE

Lots of talk about the possibility of IMOCA using foils. I had posted about that here but now it is not just talk but real. The new Banque Populaire VIII, Armels boat will be sailing on foils. The IMOCA class, now that the VOR  passed to one class boats, is the development center of offshore racing monohull. It has been so on the past and it continues to be on the present.


The idea is not using the foils to fly as one the Americas cup catamarans but to create a lot of lift and take the boat more out of the water diminishing apparently its weight. As you can see on the movie they have been testing actively the system using a mini and Armel talks about 60% advantages versus 20% disadvantages. The design is from Verdier/VPLP and the boat will be on the water 2 or three months from now. They work fast in France. I am really impressed ;-)
Some interesting considerations by Armel and VPLP:

Armel Le Cléac’h:

We went for VPLP/ Verdier because of their skill and they were nearby, as we needed to be in touch all the time. Their boats perform well and have always evolved. Banque Populaire wanted to work with a French yard, French craftsmen so we went for CDK. Once again, we can take advantage of them being close to us. .. The designers showed us the new features for the hull on which they had been working. Work began on the mold a year ago or eight months after the start of the project.

The major innovation is the arrival of foils. The designers suggested these after the experiments in the America’s Cup and in sailing in general, where foils are becoming more and more common. The idea was to use these new technologies to take the weight off the hull at certain speeds and to allow acceleration. We did a lot of work with the research team and the designers, an the whole of the Banque Populaire team. This is a huge challenge, which initially was very theoretical. We decided to carry out experiments with the Team. We chartered Sébastien Picot’s Mini 6,50 N°198 on which we fitted three daggerboards, one traditional one and two with foils to carry out trials from July 2014 under the supervision of Bertrand Pacé, to find out more. It was fascinating. It was complicated to set up and adjust and after a lot of attempts, we had some surprises. We went for one of the two options suggested by the designers. We added the foils to the construction in December.?

I wanted the cockpit to be protected and for the boat to be as dry as possible. These monohulls are usually very wet and you get the full force of the spray and waves. When sailing around the world, it is important to be able to carry out manoeuvres while protected by a sliding cover, with a helm that makes her easy to handle and that is well placed to offer good visibility. Spending a long time at the helm can make all the difference in spite of the efficiency of autopilots, as we saw in the final stretch of the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe.

Vincent Lauriot-Prévost:

When the keel is canted windward, the keel blade generates some lift for the boat and to act against the heel, we have the foils making up for the loss of power. We regain the power by generating vertical thrust. The boat is therefore in "air" mode more than the previous generations. It has to correspond to certain angles and forces that we often find in the Vendée Globe, and the result is a huge gain in speed of several knots. The boat will not be more powerful, but will appear to be lighter with a smaller wetted surface as she is raised up by these appendages...Rather than looking for a good all-round performer, we went for a boat that offers gains 60% of the time and slight losses 20% of the time.

Boat Plans At Mystic Seaport | THE A13 AND A J122 ON THE MIDDLE SEA RACE

We had talked already here about the fantastic race the new A13 was making on this edition of the Middle Sea  race, going many hours at a steady 18k average...till she lost the mast very near the finish. Now we got some images of the boat doing it:

Regarding the broken mast thats very interesting and not usual: the mast broke inside the boat at the foot. Someone want to comment on that? I would be interested ;-)

And a video from the second J122 that finished the race. Unfortunately we dont have a movie from the one that won the race on compensated and was 8 hours faster than this one. That was an awesome performance regarding the boat rating since this one make a good race finishing in 6th place on compensated time.

Regarding the photo of the J122 on top, it is the new model that only varies from Otra vez on small details, the hull and rig are the same. The biggest alteration was on the interior that is now nicer, with views to the outside. A great performance cruiser. I really cannot understand why the boat is not popular on US, to the point of not being made there. Is, it is expensive but not more than other high quality performance cruisers, like Xyachts, for example. Take a look at the new interior. Really nice:

Thats a great race (84 racers) and I will be following it here. The weather this year will be very particular and strategy regarding routing (no outside help) will count for much. In 2 days they will get some nasty weather and after that several routing options are possible. Here is the tracker:

Remember that there are two classes, the proto and the boats that are produced (Serie). on the proto
Frederic Denis is already well ahead of the pack on this boat (proto):
Quite a surprise since he is not a top gun and the boat (designed by Marc Lombard) is not new, having made the 2012 race with Antoine Rioux and in 2013 with Gahinet. The boat had problems and Gahinet was recovered by fishermen. Later the boat was extensively recovered for the new owner and this race.

On the serie Benoit Hantzperg is leading but with lots of boats very near. This guy on a brand new Pogo 3:
Not also among the favorites...but it is a long race (4000nm) and it is just beginning.

Well, boats dont last forever and once fast old hulls become slow and in need of repair, so do people and in this case the "old hull" needing a repair was my skeleton. It is repaired now with a brand new hip prosthesis. All is well I am burning the recovery time to be able to sail my boat next season, but it is painful and no much will to post. Thats the reason things have been slow here and will continue that way for some time.

Nervous making, a quick history lesson that may surprise, and some needful words from the folk at Surly...

Yesterday morning, when coming back to the dinghy dock, I noticed a boat that had its outboard leg up prop chewing away at the boat next to it which, as most of you know, is high up in the things polite folk dont do at dinghy docks.

As it happens, later in the day when I was rowing over to a friends boat to chat, I noticed the same dinghy tethered behind another boat with its leg down. It got me thinking...

Folks at dinghy docks who tend to exhibit anti-social behaviour always have a reason for what they do and where outboard-props-of-death-to-inflatables are concerned its always the "I dont want my leg to get fouled" gambit. Yet, as in the example from yesterday, I noticed that the leg was still down this morning...

So, logic would indicate that an hour at the dinghy dock has greater fouling potential than being tied to your boat for a whole day.

Though on the other hand, it might illustrate, whether conscious or unconscious, just someone pissing out his territory markers and general assholery in play.

This race is becoming a classic and it is really a shame the lousy site and the very poor race information. Much to be bettered regarding that. A race with a growing fleet with very interesting sailboats of all types competing. This year they had a top multihull trimaran, Phaedo 3, a Multi 70 that dominated the race. Phaedo used to be a much slower Gunboat 66 that used to be beaten easily by Paradox, a 63ft cruiser racer trimaran....not anymore, the new Phaedo showed of what is capable a top 70ft racing trimaran and made the Caribbean 600 in a record time well ahead of any other boat.

Outstanding performance of the new 88ft Rambler,much faster then the 63ft trimaran Paradox and than any of the 100ft racers, including Leopard.

Great performance of the 100ft Luxury yacht Nomad (Finot/Conq) that come right after the big racing boats, ahead of a Volvo 70, beating by far all other Maxi cruising yachts. Great performance of the Ker 43 Otra vez, coming among the big boats (immediately ahead a Farr 60 and immediately behind a Volvo 60). Great performance of the Class 40 Tales II (first 40fter) coming just behind a Farr 72 and ahead of a Shipman 72. After the Shipman 72 another Class 40 beating two Volvo 60 and a Swan 60.
No Gunboats and almost no cats this year. Only a Moxi 61 that was not fast beeing beaten by the 40class racers (it took a shortcut at the end of the race).

Scary numbers when you think about it. An even scarier number is that in 2008 the population density was measured at 162 people per square kilometer.

The increased population combined with a unsustainable economy, an infrastructure way past its sell-by date, and a total lack of anyone in power actually doing anything remotely constructive to fix things does not a pretty picture make.

Or, to put it in common parlance, its all going to hell in a turbo charged wicker basket. So, if you plan to visit and cruise down here Id do it sooner rather than later...

After so many enquires regarding the Roguewave XT-15 asking could it be downsized to a 14 fter instead, we’ve now revamped the design and the Roguewave XT-14 plans are now available.

Overall, the concept is the same except we’ve reduced the size of the forward casting deck in order to open up the size of the cockpit in the midship area.

The Roguewave XT-14 is a garvey vee hull, providing a clean and efficient hull shape with features and functionality typically only found in larger boats, With her wide shallow vee hull, this allows for large deck area, great stability at slow speed and smooth fast runs in choppy seas.

Compact in design, yet with it’ enormous capacity, it includes a self draining cockpit, loads of storage lockers, comfortable seating throughout and a stable platform for you and your friends and family members, along with all their gear. She can also be made 100% unsinkable with the addition of buoyancy foam, a big safety factor for all on board!

Being of composite plywood construction and reduced weight, this means that she can be easily trailered to where the action is - whether it be diving, exploring, camping, fishing or... just being out there away from it all.

"CE" & the Australian Builders Plate (ABP) 

During the past week, a company approached us who are wanting to import boats from overseas to measure and calculate the Australian Builder Plates compliance numbers for their boats.

With 6 boats already in storage, the client bought the first one up to Bundaberg and parked it in our shed. He mentioned that the boats were already CE certified for the European markets, showing us the documentation etc and asked could we use the information provided on the CE plates.

Looking over the boat and the CE documentation and being that the boat was manufactured in China, a few of the numbers didn’t quite add up. So I suggested that we re-check the boat and recalculate to AS1799 as I was a bit suspicions about the CE plate

For those who are wondering what “CE” stands for :??
CE marking is a key indicator of a product’s compliance with EU legislation and enables the free movement of products within the European market. By affixing the CE marking on a product, a manufacturer is declaring, on her sole responsibility, conformity with all of the legal requirements to achieve CE marking and therefore ensuring validity for that product to be sold throughout the European Economic Area.

Confusing CE marks

Some products have a CE symbol that has been alleged to stand for China Export or China Electronics and is confusingly very similar to the E.U.s CE mark. The two letters are close together, not spaced as in the European conformance mark.

Some products may be conforming but not displaying the logotype correctly and others may illegally put the correct mark on non-conforming items, or on an item without the required accompanying certificate of conformity.




In this case the boat had a plate similar to the European CE plate, giving the impression that the boat was legal and certified to the European markets. In other words, if you not aware of what to look for, you can get caught out.

After measuring the boat and doing a bit of number crunching and stability calcs, the boat as it stood with the so called “CE” certification didn’t comply with any standards. So, with this in mind and after a discussion with the client, we opted to recalculate to to the AS1799 standard. This means now that overall, he can sleep at nights knowing that his boats actually comply to a standard and most importantly by being a business, won’t cope a $25,000 fine if audited by the Marine Safety Authorities. So with this now done, we look forward to working with Paul in regards to the rest of his boats.

Well I’ve nearly finished the mods, a bit more sanding then it’s ready for painting – planning to repaint the bottom of boat to match it all up. It’s a nice walk through now and I’m very happy with it.


The seat top that was cut out became the ramp up to the floor. The pics probably don’t do justice as to how much standing room there is now, but it’s a good size and certainly provides a great platform to fish from.


Next mods – hopefully forward steering??

 My fishing style is typical for a Florida fly fisherman in the microskiff community. I fish 40% of my time solo with a fly rod from the bow while using a small trolling motor or short push pole from the bow. Most of the time, the water where I fish solo is 2 to 4 feet deep. 50% percent of the time I will be fishing with one other person. In that situation one person is on the poling platform pushing and maneuvering the boat with a 19-21 foot long carbon fiber push pole. The other person is on the bow casting a fly rod. That is the ideal fish stalking situation.
       

It typically occurs in water ranging from 1-3 foot deep. Sometimes even shallower if the red fish get into the grass flats during high tide. 5% of the time I will have a total of 3 people on the boat including myself. The two other people will be seated and will cast off the sides of the boat and fish “old man” style. The other 5% of the time the boat will be beached and I’ll be fishing from shore, using the boat only to get to my location.
Although I do most of my fishing in brackish water shallows I do have to cross open water too from time to time. Our conditions here in the Mosquito lagoon are not like the bays you have there. Water is typically 4-8 feet deep and 14 foot at the channels. Waves are short and choppy. When the wind is up (30 km/h) the waves get very choppy but remain short (just barely white capping by most standards) but the period between waves is very short due to the shallow water.

There are a lot of flat bottom boats in use around here. I do not want a flat bottom boat. I don’t want to pound too much. I think a little vee will be needed. No more than 10 degrees I guess because it still has to perform well in the shallows. I prefer a flared hull rather than a slab sided one because as you know, with slab sides in the first 1/2 of the hull, you are in for a wet ride. I want to remain fairly dry even for a small boat.

For ease of construction and storage I prefer a boat less than 60 inches wide. 54” to 56” is ideal at the deck and 48” at the water line I think. A boat with that displacement will run fine with a 20-25hp I think. I do not want to buy anything over 25hp. Also, this boat will be towed by a small Subaru. You will find that many fly fishermen here in Florida have switched to smaller boats and smaller cars. This is a good reason why the www.microskiff.com site is becoming popular here. A 16 footer fits nicely into my Garage or any other typical American garage. A 18 footer will require a hinged tongue trailer and being stored at a slight angle. Although a 18 footer will track better while being poled, building one will require personal inspection by FWC in order to get registration.

Here in Florida any home built watercraft over 16 foot must be inspected by FWC. Less than 16 foot watercraft do not need to be inspected. So I’m not sure if the two extra feet are really worth it. You will find that ANYTHING you design for the American Market should be available in two sizes. One less than 16 and one over 16 but slightly less than 18 foot. As for fit and finish. I am searching for a fishing boat with a great performing hull. I don’t care for a yacht finish. I want a durable boat that is light, simple to build, and possesses a great hull that is quiet is the shallows, doesn’t slap much in light chop or quartering winds, and is reasonable stable for it’s size. I like fully decked boats but I’m open to bench seats as long as there is a built in casting deck up front. I know stability is in the eye of the beholder but I think we here in Florida are used to boats that are much less stable that what you consider reasonably stable. I guess this is probably because we have wimpy waves here in our local water. What people call 2 foot chop here you might call a 10 inch roller.
