Dinghy Boat Plans

Building your own boat

Gday all,
We like to remind people that building a boat is not just another project, but a lifetime of memories the whole family can enjoy. Sounds nice, but how does that play out in real life? Here are the words of some of our clients that illustrate this point:

Paul writes:
The sea strike 16 is a “big volume” boat for its size, a great centre consul design and enough storage
compartments to stow everything plus the kitchen sink!  With so much great storage under casting deck, in front of console, under the seat and a big kill tank/esky compartment at the rear, building the Sea Strike 16 has been very rewarding for myself and my two sons. We have always said “lets build a boat” and we finally are. Overall, great design, great plans, easy to follow and understand, which all comes back to the designer.

Mathew writes:
When I rang up Mark, the first time, I asked him a stack of questions; like, “How easy is it?” I think the
replied came “if kids can build this boat, with your background, I’m sure you can…”, as they say, the rest is history. What sold me on Marks plans were the details in the drawings, when compared to American plans. After studying the plans in depth, I went about ordering the plywood and other materials. During the boat build, Mark was always available to answer any questions, and he would often ring up to see how everything was going; Mark’s advice and experience is second to none.

So what is it that makes boatbuilding such a unique & fulfilling experience as opposed to just buying one?

You can build a boat with all of the features you want, not what the boat manufacturer decides you need. Plus, there is no comparison to the pride of being able to say, "I built it myself!"

Save up to 40-50% off the cost of a manufactured boat, if you can even find one that compares to your personalized creation.

Purchase materials as you need them, so you dont need to shell out a huge chunk of change and then make payments, pay interest, etc.--you know the drill.

Involve the kids, neighbors, friends and family--this can be a fun experience for everyone!

Finally, embrace the challenge! Boatbuilding is something new to learn, to pass down to future generations and connect you with the process of creating something with your own hands. Nothing compares!

Dont put off building the boat of your dreams--visit our online catalog of Boat Designs today and turn that dream into reality.

If you are already building a boat, which Im sure many of you are, do us a favor and pass the word about Bowdidge Marine Designs--we would sure appreciate it!
Until next time...
Have a good one and…

Geoffs Magnum 12
The boat has been finished for a while but we finally got to put it in the water today when we arrived on
holidays at the same time as my parents. The boat belongs to my Father as it is planned to make it easier to handle with lighter weight and a smaller lighter engine.

Dad chose a 9.8hp tohatsu engine. This engine has the same power head as the 6 and 8 HP outboards. Tohastu just ring its neck a little more by ignition timing advances and porting the engine to get more power. It is a great match with the magnum 12.

I just got off the phone to my Father. Now he has the motor a bit more run in he took his GPS out with him and did some WOT speed runs in the little 9.8hp tohatsu.
Run 1 against the tide 37.5km/hr (20.2knots)
Run 2 with the tide 40km/hr (21.6knots)

When he took the engine for its first service after a couple of tanks of fuel and told the mechanic who replied "It must be a good little boat". My Dad also commented on the flat ride at WOT; no porpoising and
minimal bow lift when getting on the plane. Overall the Magnum 12 has performed as we had hoped.

Hi all been a long time coming but finally sort of finished. Carpet to trim, replace a wire feeder box thats in
the road of the back battery box hatch. Had to do a leaky bung test so put my numbers and rego sticker from my other boat to give it a run. After taking it for a run, trimed in and I got 25knots. After triming out, i got 28.5 to 29.3 with a 100kg passanger and 40lts of fuel. So up one hole for the next run, the motor was sitting on the transom. So im happy with that, the boat running out the passage into 15kts of breeze was good.............. dry boat.

I put my neighbour on the tiller and walked around the boat at speed and found to be good and sitting in the passangers seat felt great and the hull is so quite its not funny and yes very smooth and felt very solid when cutting the water with Nigel sitting to port i did not feel it on the tiller and hes a big boy, it is more stable than my mates blue fin 4.5 plate with 13deg deadrise,i got out to late for the wind against tide with the southerly blowing up the passage, i was hopeing for rougher condicions, ill phone you up once ive taken it out for a fish in the bay and give you a:lol: and thats what im very happy about.

Full brief, one thing i will say is that my passangers cant winge about slogging home across the bay anymore

We look forward to hearing more from Chris and his ET487 in the future.

OUR "REEL QUICK" FISHING SECTION

ADAM AND HIS SEA STRIKE 16
Put in some milage yesterday. 160km (86nmi) We went hunting for new spots and checked out the 12 mile.
Note the NSW coastline off Sydney as
a very faint line in the background !!
Once again the wind was up in the morning and then flattened out later on. After trying a couple of marks without success and loosing some gear to the leather jackets we headed out to the 12. Hadnt been out there before and the SS16 Blue Arrow loved it. The swell was up a little and we were heading into it but we still averaged 18 to 20kn. Arriving at the 12 we sounded up plenty of fish and on the first drop Dave landed his first King on a jig. We thought we were on the start of a hot session but that was it. Live bait, jigs nothing. They were there but not interested..We jigged and jigged and jigged  It was the first time I had spent jigging more than a few minutes. Who said fishing was relaxing..Man I feel like I was pumping weights yesterday

Then we headed to the Peak and once again they were there but nothing, one hook up then lost it. We headed in towards the headland and downrigged a few spots with nothing so we headed home.

Had a great day on the water averaging 18- 25kn and using an estimated 45-50ltrs would have been less if I wasnt going flat chat everywhere
