Boat Plans Canada | The Nature of Boats

Boat Plans Canada

Walking around boatyards and boat shows, there are so many boats to look at, that in the end they all begin to look the same. The question I often ask myself is:

“What is the purpose or nature of this boat?”

Designing is not only about engineering, but also about being artistic, designing the boat to look like what its intended for. Full bows give the impression of a strong boat intended for offshore use. Low flat sheerlines or gunnales give the impression of river or lake boats. Extreme raked bows give the impression of speed, curved or rounded bows the impression of slow and sea kindly. The list is endless.

As an example, the Patrol boat opposite was designed by a friend of mine, Tommy Ericsson. Just by looking at the boat, with her sweet lines and proportions, it gives an impression straight off that the boat is for serious offshore use and with her 25 degree deadrise, she can really take a pounding.

?
What is this?
? However, on many occasion, you find boats with mix match of all the above with the impression that you cannot determine what the nature of the boat is.

For example; A speed boat or ski boat may be structurally strong enough to take you 40nm offshore to go reef fishing on a flat calm day, but the question is…would you?

Of course not, because it doesn’t “look” like it could. In other words, its “nature” warns your senses not to go out there in such a boat.

What about taking a flat bottom boat offshore, that I see so often pushed in various forums? Well, unless your into having your spine ripped out through the roof of your mouth, go for it.

Another thing I find interesting, is peoples fascination with “Shiny toys” We love to surround ourselves with such objects. Watching TV or reading magazines, they are all filled with shiny objects. Even the magazines themselves are shiny and glossy. Overall, there’s nothing wrong with that, however the marketing people have realized this and using our inherit “need” for such things; market this as something we cannot do without. Walk around boat shows and the like, and it’s the toys that grab everyone’s attention and overall, what the boat companies push hard.

One of the designs we worked on - A 55fter

On a million dollar boat, yes its understandable as its something one would expect as shown by the picture opposite, but on small boats where seaworthiness is paramount, toys should be secondary.

Many years ago whilst at the Sanctuary Boat show, I saw this line of boats, but one in particular, which was as ugly as sin, was totally crowed with people.

Why I asked myself?

Climbing on board, it was filled with shiny toys. Everywhere you put your hand, you touched something shiny. No one looked at the hull except how shiny it was or even asked what type of service it was intended for. They were all commenting on the toys. So overall, the marketing guru’s are pushing the "Purpose or Nature" of the design to the rear of peoples minds and its now... all about the “shiny toys”.

I remember when we sailed overseas and were anchored off Johor Baru (Malaysia), one of our friends anchored next door (Danielle), used to deliver brand new yachts from the US to France. At the time, France said the any new boats imported (sailed) into France would attract no import duty. So Danielle working for a French company, used to sail across the Atlantic delivering boats and on landing, jump straight onto a plane and head back to the US to pick up the next boat.

Well, he commented that when he arrived, the boats having no structural integrity, were falling apart with cracks appearing everywhere. Turns out, the trend in Europe at the time was not about sailing he said, but about being tied up stern to the rock wall. Sitting back in your cockpit with all your friends and family, you would watched all the people walk by, whilst you sucked on pigs feet dipped in white wine sauce, feeling all “La de da” . This was a typical days outing.

So, with this mindset, the company basically ripped out the guts of the boats when building them and filled them with all the shiny toys as a marketing strategy to boost sales.

So, when looking around for a design to build, ask yourself...."what is the Nature or purpose of this boat and what is it really intended for?"
Look at the hull, overall room and what you want the boat for....

And as for the toys…you can always add them later.

An accolade to Mark I have built quiet a few boats paying more than 20 times than Mark’s asking price for the SportsMaster for plans and I have never been so well accommodated. It is a pleasure to know that your every inquiry is met with an immediate reply and you have the knowledge that Mark ability also stretches to the practical. If you are considering building you can be confident of professionalism and practicality.

I will drop the frames in and post some more pictures then so far this is a walk in the park I hope it continues.

Cheers,
Graham

Brendans Muhsulu 12

Mark
Some further build pictures. Turning out well and started some filleting.

Maybe too many stitches towards the bow but it came well together.

Soon learnt that spending time chamfering (bevel) edges makes the ply come together really well.
