Boat Plans Bolger | MAXI 1200 DOES IT WORTH THE MONEY

Boat Plans Bolger

This was the boat I was more curious about on the Dusseldorf boat show for several reasons, one of them to know if Delphia, now the owner of Maxi, had managed to bring the price down on the Swedish boats known by their quality and also by their high price and the answer to that is YES, a big one, at least in what regards the introductory price on the Dusseldorf boat show, that I dont believe it will last.

They were offering a very well standard equipped boat with an introduction package that includes equipment like webasto heating, 2 electric 50 winches, Gas detector and inverter, as well as several other equipment that will make it a well equipped sail way boat for 170 000 Euros (excluding VAT)!!!! The "normal" price of the boat equipped this way would be 198 000 Euros, a price that does not look excessive to me.
Has the quality been affected? In what regards building I dont think so, in what regards the interior it looks a bit less luxurious than an "older" Maxi but the quality is certainly above average with very nice detail designs. I cannot say that I like very much the interior design in what regards small details and mostly in what regards the wood color combination with the fabric of the cushions, but for that price I could live with it. The wood is too dark and the wood implementations too heavy (for instance on that massif saloon table) for the light cabinet style. However the boat has some great details like the smoke extractor with illumination that extends over the oven with a touch on a button or the rotating seat that provides a very good and comfortable navigation station without "spoiling" the nice saloon area.

Regarding sailing hardware everything is of great quality and I (and many for what seems to me) just complain about the lack of a traveler even if the way the main sheet is brought to the center of the boat to a powerful winch at very easy reach of the helms man can contribute to a good control. The truth is that this is a modern tendency and boats like Swan and XP yachts come now without a traveler. I dont like it but it seems to work relatively well even in performance cruisers.

The hull looks as nice as it looked on the renderings, the storage on the three cabin version (that I saw) is a bit short for extended cruising but it will be certainly more than enough on the 2 cabin version and more details have come out in what regards the boat structure that is outstanding with a big carbon beam as central frame (that will reach the rudder that goes through it), carbon reinforcements on the bow area (carbon bowsprit) and on the link between the chainplates and the main carbon beam. Over that a more conventional structural grid distributes the efforts and takes the furniture over it. The hull is made using Vinylester resins and it is cored using PVC as core.

The stability curve and the Polar speeds confirm what I have said previously, a very fast boat, specially with light winds, sailing faster than the wind till about 6,5K wind. Regarding planning the narrow hull does not allow planning without very high wind speeds (less than 10k with 20k wind) but will certainly provide a very good upwind performance. It will be a boat that with 8k wind will sail over 7k and that on most conditions it will sail between 7 and 8.5K and that will allow for very good average speeds.
The stability curve shows a stiff boat with particularly good reserve stability with a high AVS (near 130º) and a very small inverted stability in comparison with the positive one. Regarding the outstanding reserve stability it suffices to say that the boat is making as much force to right itself up at 90º as the force it is opposing to the wind when it is sailing with 25º of heel, that as you can imagine, is a very big one.

A great boat, very well built, very seaworthy, fast at an incredible introductory price. If I was looking for a boat I would not let pass this one and I could live with the high quality interior, even if some of the design integration pisses me off. A true sailors boat that I dont believe  will be a big success since the narrow hull provides a comfortable interior but a small one for a 40ft and it seems to me that will not please the wives that look mostly to that part of the boat and have a decisive say on the choosing of the boat.

Boat Building Plans And Kits | ARC ON THE FAST LANE

Boat Building Plans And Kits

And as subtitle: the expensive and the "cheap" options LOL. The ARC is almost starting and this year we have some very interesting performance cruisers doing the passage, among them two Outremer 51 (picture above), a Neel 45 "racing", a Pogo 50, two Pogos 12.50, a Knierim 49, a Marten 49, a XP44 and a More 55.
It is going to be very interesting to follow the comparative performances of these boats (and others) and I mean the rich and the poor because their price tag is very different as well as the interior space and comfort. The cat and the trimaran offer an incomparably bigger living space with a price tag to match: 750 000 euros for the Outremer 51, and for the standard version of the Neel 45 538 000 euros. This are base prices, not including VAT and the Neel is not the racing version.
The Outremer 51 and the Neel are very different boats, a cat and a trimaran. The Outremet has dagerboards and therefore a good performance upwind, the Neel 45 has not and the upwind performance suffers, but this is a downwind passage and that is not relevant here. The price is also very different.
The Pogo 50 has a good cruising interior, on a zen way and it is slightly more expensive than the Nell 45, at 591 000 euros but offers a better performance, specially upwind:
Pogo-50 from Andreas Lindlahr on Vimeo.
The Knierim 49 is  not very well known, it is made by a German shipyard (Knierim) that has made till know 3 49, a beautiful and fast yacht. I could not find prices but I would not be surprised if the Knierim 49 costed as much as the Outremer 51.

The Knierim 49 is a 13 year old Judel/Vrolijk design, a great design and a boat very different from the Pogo 50, that is a boat based on solo racers while the Knierim comes from the IRC cruiser/racer tradition and needs more crew to be fully exploited.

The XP 44 is a boat that comes on the Knierim 49 same line of design development. Its the smaller till now and compared with all the others, the less expensive boat at 358 800 euros. It has a great cruising interior for this type of boat and it will suit the cruising style of a sportive sailor. In fact there is one circumnavigating.

The Marten 49 is another gorgeous expensive carbon boat, designed by Reishel&Pugh. The design, like the one of the Knierim has already more than a decade but was also a very advanced design, with a lifting keel and a great cruising interior. Both boats weight about the same (9.5T) and the design is not very different (IRC derived). Both still look very nice and it seems time has not made wrinkles on these two, that remain beautiful sailboats, and of course, damn fast ones.
And finally the poor mens fast offshore performance cruiser, the smaller Pogo 12.50, at 253 488 euros, a boat that comes from the Solo racing tradition and is designed to be exploited with a small crew or even solo, if the sailor is a really good one. Fast, specially on the trade winds, with an interior that is functional and kind of comfortable in a zen way, it is the voyage boat option for the "poor" sportive couples.
Well, the Pogo is the cheapest boat that can be bought to sail really fast on passage but that seems to be changing with the More 55 being sold for comparatively less money. The More 55 costs about half of what costs the Pogo 50 and not much more than the Pogo 12.50 (295 500 euros). Lets reserve the boat performance till  we see what really is able to do, but looking at the specifications and design, I would say it is a very fast one. The interior seems a good cruising interior, needing some improvements, but that is just the first boat.
You are all invited to follow the ARC. It starts Sunday 22. This is the tracker: http://www.worldcruising.com/arc/eventfleetviewer.aspx
And if you want to follow it more closely and with some interesting company, we are doing it on a forum, on this thread (I am Polux there):

Boat Plans And Kits | MAXI 1200

Boat Plans And Kits

As you can see, it looks well, the new Maxi. For the ones who dont know Maxi Yacht was a Swedish company that made expensive performance cruisers, not really cruiser racers, but fast cruising boats with luxurious interiors, having Pelle Petterson as a designer .

The brand was bought by Najad and when Najad went down and was bought by other companies, Maxi yachts was left to die. When everybody thought that Maxi yacht was finished  an improbable savior appeared, the Polish Delphia.

Delphia is a relatively new company that started with a technological help of the Italian Comar (the ones that make the Comet) and soon it was making reliable quality sailboats even if the designs are a bit under average regarding other mass production builders (they insisted in having their boats designed by Polish NAs).

They had the good sense to ask for help to old Pelle Petterson to finish the model that Maxi was developing when it went down, a more sportive model and Pelle accepted the challenge of working with the "kids" from Delphia and it seems they got along together notwithstanding the age difference. I am very curious about the result that will be presented at the Dusseldorf boat show.

It is not only a difference of age but a difference of methods in designing a boat, being Pelle from the old school, designing by hand and applying intuition and the knowledge of a life designing fast sailboats, complemented with the work of the new Polish NAs that design with cad and use modern VPP and CFD to improve the design.

As I said the hull looks very nice, relatively narrow, with 3.75m for 11.56m of hull length, a considerable draft with a torpedo keel (2.32m) a light weight (6900kg), specially considering that 36% of it is ballast, mostly on that torpedo. Being a narrow boat allows it to have less sail area than a more beamier one and it carries upwind only 84m2 sail area.
In what regards design, a very interesting boat with a hull with chines, that will allow a considerably heeling angle before hitting the water and for what we can see of the building, a top boat that uses carbon to reinforce more stressed areas and a structural grid to distribute effort by the hull . The hull  is a cored one (with PVC as core) and laminated with vinylester resins, being the keel area  monolithic with reinforced lamination using carbon fibers.
The interior layout seems very good and I am very curious regarding the quality of the interior design, that contrary to other Maxi is a more modern one. The designs dont look great but they are just hand made designs and what matters is the real thing.

The rigging is adapted to solo sailing and makes a lot of sense regarding cruising but I dont understand two things: The fixed cockpit table and the absence of traveler. That is a big disadvantage in what regards club racing and even in what regards cruising, I like to have the sail properly trimmed with the help of a big traveler and I like to take the cockpit table away and have all the cockpit space available.

Probably a small traveler can be mounted but only over the cockpit seats and that will make awkward the passage between the wheel and the forward winches. I really dont like the boat design in what regards that and I think it will not be easy to find an alternate solution, giving the cockpit design. Great for fast unconcerned cruising but not a polyvalent boat, able to cruise and race and that is just a shame since it seems a very fast hull.

Maybe the boat is just meant to offer only that since I dont see also an adjustable backstay and it seems the boat is offered standard with a bowthruster, that seems dispensable to me in a boat with those dimensions and weight. Off course, another matter I am very curious about is the price. Will this boat have Maxi prices, that were really maxi or will be at mid way between Maxi and Delphia prices? Much of the success of this boat depends on that.

Boat Plans Pdf | GORGEOUS KER 33!!!

Boat Plans Pdf

This beauty, contrary to other KER, will be a relatively affordable boat: It is not a carbon one but an Eglass cored boat with aluminium spars standard (carbon option) and everything was made to bring the price down without compromising too much performance. The price without taxes will round 145 000 Euros.

It has a moderate beam hull (3.36m), a not very deep torpedo keel (2.00m), it will be relatively heavy (3750kg) and that means probably a very big B/D ratio that will be put at good use upwind by the typically Ker designed transom (without chines). A boat that will be more at ease in crewed racing than on solo or short crewed racing.

It has a powerful engine (30hp), an interior that allows offshore racing (3 double berths and a good galley) or even some spartan but certainly fast cruising.

The boat is manufactured by McConaghy in China and I bet it will be a success. There are already several commands. It is not only beautiful as it will be certainly fast and with a contained price: a great combination ;-)

Boat Plans Bateau | TRANSQUADRA 2nd LEG MADEIRA MARTINIQUE

Boat Plans Bateau

Qq images du départ en attendant le montage... by overlapprod

As most certainly will know this is a Transat solo or duo race for amateur sailors (at least 40 years old) with sailboats below a given limit of IRC rating. Mostly small fast boats (31/36ft) with some bigger comparatively slower boats on the mix...lots of boats, over a hundred.
The second leg started 3 days ago and they have been sailing fast with 20/25K steady winds and that has been taking a toll on the boats: Two boats lost the mast, one ripped the main sail and another with one of the rudders broken.
You can follow the race on the tracker here:
http://www.transquadra.com/positions.php
And on the news, that unfortunately are only in French:

Some great movies from the first leg of the race (St Nazaire/Madeira or Barcelona/Madeira):
