Boat Plans Bolger | MAXI 1200 DOES IT WORTH THE MONEY

This was the boat I was more curious about on the Dusseldorf boat show for several reasons, one of them to know if Delphia, now the owner of Maxi, had managed to bring the price down on the Swedish boats known by their quality and also by their high price and the answer to that is YES, a big one, at least in what regards the introductory price on the Dusseldorf boat show, that I dont believe it will last.

They were offering a very well standard equipped boat with an introduction package that includes equipment like webasto heating, 2 electric 50 winches, Gas detector and inverter, as well as several other equipment that will make it a well equipped sail way boat for 170 000 Euros (excluding VAT)!!!! The "normal" price of the boat equipped this way would be 198 000 Euros, a price that does not look excessive to me.
Has the quality been affected? In what regards building I dont think so, in what regards the interior it looks a bit less luxurious than an "older" Maxi but the quality is certainly above average with very nice detail designs. I cannot say that I like very much the interior design in what regards small details and mostly in what regards the wood color combination with the fabric of the cushions, but for that price I could live with it. The wood is too dark and the wood implementations too heavy (for instance on that massif saloon table) for the light cabinet style. However the boat has some great details like the smoke extractor with illumination that extends over the oven with a touch on a button or the rotating seat that provides a very good and comfortable navigation station without "spoiling" the nice saloon area.

Regarding sailing hardware everything is of great quality and I (and many for what seems to me) just complain about the lack of a traveler even if the way the main sheet is brought to the center of the boat to a powerful winch at very easy reach of the helms man can contribute to a good control. The truth is that this is a modern tendency and boats like Swan and XP yachts come now without a traveler. I dont like it but it seems to work relatively well even in performance cruisers.

The hull looks as nice as it looked on the renderings, the storage on the three cabin version (that I saw) is a bit short for extended cruising but it will be certainly more than enough on the 2 cabin version and more details have come out in what regards the boat structure that is outstanding with a big carbon beam as central frame (that will reach the rudder that goes through it), carbon reinforcements on the bow area (carbon bowsprit) and on the link between the chainplates and the main carbon beam. Over that a more conventional structural grid distributes the efforts and takes the furniture over it. The hull is made using Vinylester resins and it is cored using PVC as core.

The stability curve and the Polar speeds confirm what I have said previously, a very fast boat, specially with light winds, sailing faster than the wind till about 6,5K wind. Regarding planning the narrow hull does not allow planning without very high wind speeds (less than 10k with 20k wind) but will certainly provide a very good upwind performance. It will be a boat that with 8k wind will sail over 7k and that on most conditions it will sail between 7 and 8.5K and that will allow for very good average speeds.

The stability curve shows a stiff boat with particularly good reserve stability with a high AVS (near 130º) and a very small inverted stability in comparison with the positive one. Regarding the outstanding reserve stability it suffices to say that the boat is making as much force to right itself up at 90º as the force it is opposing to the wind when it is sailing with 25º of heel, that as you can imagine, is a very big one.

A great boat, very well built, very seaworthy, fast at an incredible introductory price. If I was looking for a boat I would not let pass this one and I could live with the high quality interior, even if some of the design integration pisses me off. A true sailors boat that I dont believe  will be a big success since the narrow hull provides a comfortable interior but a small one for a 40ft and it seems to me that will not please the wives that look mostly to that part of the boat and have a decisive say on the choosing of the boat.

I was reading an old cruising log the other day detailing a familys cruise from the UK to the Med then on to the Caribbean and back to the UK and it reminded me just how much cruising has changed in the last thirty years.

They didnt have electronics of any sort. Not even a radio. Lighting was kerosene as was the stove and there was no ice box with the more perishable provisions being simply kept in the bilge.

Their boat (an Eventide) was all of 26-feet for the four of them with not so much an inkling of mutiny...

Oh yeah, they also seemed to be having a great time in the process.

What i am of course referring to is what is by now one of my favourite things to do; pulling a mould of something out of the oven and then pulling some nice looking carbon bit out of the mould. and intending to wait until it is cool to open the mould but not having the patience and getting burnt. and in this case dropping half the mould on my toe.

cool. so randemnity aside, i have, for the most part, a foil. the flap works after a bit of cracking of stray bog, and the recess i made in the mould (at the T joint for the flap) came out perfectly.

The oven sat on 75-80 degrees for 24 hours, last time it was summer and it all got a bit hotter, more like a solid 80-85. and the resin loves that, so consequently i havent got the tesnile strength in the resin quite as good. and it has a different, dull pitch when you knock it. but its still ok. that coupled with the better lay-up and a couple of other dirty tricks i have up my sleeve (rubs hands together) should hopefully make this one not break.

so also the top hinge worked well. The kevlar is 2 layers of 75g, one at 45 degrees, so its pretty much exactly as flexible/stiff as it needs to be. as you can see the gap closes up pretty much prefectly when its fully deflected, which will be fine, as id say it will create turbulant bubble at the kink and be pretty efficient. with the flap up at high speed the separation point on the bottom surface is well forward of the gap, so no real drag there either I imagine. Thats my (probably ill informed) justification anyway. wait and see.

Some very depressing news, R.E.M. making a point, and and in the "profitability trumps right" department...

So, in the "a bit of warning" department because most folks dont really like surprises.

For a long time Ive been thinking about doing  a somewhat out-of-the-box documentary film on various aspects of boat design, boat construction, and how we actually use boats in the real world. Or in other words, to simply scratch my curiousity on a subject quite dear to my heart and, to steal a phrase from Ratty, continue "just messing around in boats".

Of course, there always a downside, which will mean a bit less time for Boat Bits, VolksCruiser, and Fishing Under Sail but, hopefully, there will be enough spinoff from the film project (outtakes, production diary, and shameless pimping) to keep readers reading and some of it might actually be interesting...

Since we seem to be coming up to the fairly round if somewhat magical number of 2222 posts you might find Boat Bits doing a bit of morphing come 2223 or so.

Boat Plans African Queen | SOLARIS 50 I LOVE IT!!!

I had already posted about the Solaris 50:

 http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/10/solaris-50.html and I had said only nice things about it but now I have seen the boat in Dusseldorf and I was greatly impressed. This is not only a very beautiful boat but also the kind of boat that I would have if I won the lottery.

And for the quality I ended up not finding it extravagantly expensive at 570000 euros, VAT included,  lot less then what would cost an Halberg Rassy 48 with a similar built quality.

On the link above you can check out what I had said about the boat dimensions but I will add that with a beam of 4.55m is significantly narrower then most production main market boats (Sense 50-4.86m; Hanse 505-4.75m; Sun Odyssey 509-4.69m; Bavaria cruiser 51-4.67m), has a bigger B/D ratio, a more efficient keel and a considerably bigger draft (or in option a smaller draft and an even bigger B/D ratio). This extra keel efficiency and superior B/D ratio will give not only a more powerful boat but also one with a better reserve stability.

The 14 200kg of weight are very similar to the one of the above main market cruisers even considering that this weight, contrary to the others is not an empty weight but but the one of a boat in sailing condition with half tankage. So it is not a particularly light boat but consider that contrary to the others this is a vacuum infused cored boat (Airex) using vynilester-epoxy resins with carbon reinforcements and one that can have carbon spars.

Knowing that they have 40 years of experience building boats that means that this boat is overbuilt and all that extra weight is aimed to increase boat strength. They not only use bulkheads laminated to the deck and hull as they use composite cored laminates on the two main bulkheads to  diminish dilatation problems between two different materials. The idea is to built a kind of monoblock boat increasing overall stiffness.

Many looking at this boat would say: Another pretty fragile boat designed for med sailing. Well, fragile it is not and a boat doesnt have to be ugly to be very seaworthy and strong and Solaris is a paradigma regarding that. Besides the winch position, the self tacking jib and mainsheet system (that can have a traveler or not) everything is designed taking into account solo or short crew sailing.

A word regarding handholds that were almost absent on the 50ft at Dusseldorf: They are mounted to the owner request. You can see that on the Solaris 58 that is side by side with the 50. There are handrails on the deck while the 50 has none. Those steel handrails can also be mounted on the interior ceiling also.

The sprayhood is very interesting: it can be stowed and completely covered on a space provided for that on the cabin or deployed and... surprise surprise, it is an huge one that forms a completely covered enclosure. I would like to have seen that, as well as how it fits on the storage space and how much time it takes to deploy but they did not have it at Dusseldorf.

Finally in what regards storage this boat is one of the few 50ft that offers a garage with enough space for a small dinghy and a forward sail locker/storage space with considerable dimensions. On long range cruising, while crossing oceans the dinghy can be deflated and the extra garage space can be  used for extra storage.

Canoe Boat Plans | Mosquito it Lives!!!!

In case everyone figured I was just goofing off for the last few weeks here is the latest. My mom has been down here almost every weekend for the last 2 months and she has been a great help. It has also helped to start familiarizing herself with the boat. This weekend my dad came down and offered his assistance cutting out parts and gluing them in. Its amazing how much more you can do with 2 people.

We have finished up the cabin sole or sleeping shelf of whatever you want to call it. I prefer "great cabin" and this weekend we installed the main deck with its hatch opening. The deck is made of a strip building product called duracore. It is 3/8" end grain balsa sandwiched between 1/16" strips of western red to give it some longitudinal stiffness while planking. We laid up a 25" wide cambered panel of it on a curved mold (bent plywood) all in one shot in a vacuum bag last weekend. The panel was 9lbs before fiberglass which is a little more than 4mm plywood (0.4lbs/sqft versus 0.6lb/sqft) but the advantages are that the inside of the "cabin" has a smooth roof for sleeping comfort while still giving the deck adequate stiffness for tromping around and raising/lowering the mast. The deck could have been a foam core layup but this stuff was laying around and about to become firewood.

The daggerboard tunk halves are laid up and ready to be joined and then installed in the amas. The daggers are ready for a final fairing and last coat of epoxy.

The Amas will get some 2lb expanding foam and then the decks will be going on as soon as the trunks are complete.

The next big milestone will be the first float and test paddle sometime in early december. I will be going out of the country over the christmas holiday so work will be on hold until I get back to finish all the rigging and get her sailing sometime in February with the race the first week of March. Yikes.


Current weight breakdown (I know your curious): drum rollllll....

Main hull: 105lbs plus bow deck, hardware, more epoxy (looking like it will end around 125)

Amas: 45lbs each plus some expanding foam, decks and trunks. (looking like around 65lbs a piece) Daggers: 12 lbs each

Rig: recently purchased a carbon stick that was on a Bimare Javeline 18HT catamaran. maybe 30lbs

Add sails and rudder, rigging, lines and some more epoxy and she is closing in on 350 at an alarming rate. I am doing my utmost to keep this in check. Im still emotionally ok with the her weight. We will see. Whatever it comes out at youll wish it was lighter but thats just the way it goes.

She has also earned her name. Mosquito

Aside from the many mosquitoes that have met their end by flying into my wet epoxy and become part of the hull (and those that I have swatted), she will be a fast racing machine in all wood and so a nod is given to the de Havilland Mosquito which was a wonder in its own time. Once the fastest plane in the world at 400mph and constructed of all wood. Pretty Amazing. I often feel like I am building a fuselage as much as a sailboat. Mosquito video link

 As most certainly will know this is a Transat solo or duo race for amateur sailors (at least 40 years old) with sailboats below a given limit of IRC rating. Mostly small fast boats (31/36ft) with some bigger comparatively slower boats on the mix...lots of boats, over a hundred.

The second leg started 3 days ago and they have been sailing fast with 20/25K steady winds and that has been taking a toll on the boats: Two boats lost the mast, one ripped the main sail and another with one of the rudders broken.

Initially Comar announced as first cats on his new cat line  a 37 and a 62:

"The Comet 50 and Cat was developed with the intention of making a fast oceanic high performance comfortable. The project still in the preliminary stage has the ambition to become a point of reference for all fans of catamarans that aim to travel the world in safety and comfort with daily averages impossible to a monohull or heavy catamaran with relative small sail areas...The boat will be built in composite with extensive use of carbon on the most stressed areas."

The design is from Marc Lombard and the cat 50 will weight only 11000kg. It will have a lot of stability due to a large beam (7.30m) and low CG, will have long dagerboards (2,45m draft) that are not visible on the drawings (rotating ones?).
It will be a very fast sailboat, able to carry a lot of sail: Mainsail 87.3m2, Genoa 130% 55m2, code zero 115m2, Spy asymmetric 160m2. The tankage will be considerable (600L of water 360L of diesel) and it will have two powerful 60hp engines. It looks nice to me, lets hope the price is a nice one too ;-)
