Boat Plans Wood | Our new Latest News Blog

Boat Plans Wood

G’day to all and welcome,

I am new to “blogging”, so this may take some time to start running properly.

Our new blog is replacing the “Latest News” section within our website. With so many build updates coming through, along with “New Designs Coming” and other such projects, our latest news blog is a great way to keep the world informed about what we and our clients are doing in reagards to building their boats and launchings.

I guess that we have been lucky that so many people are prepared to dig deep in our website to look for what is new and we are thankful to all of you for doing that to keep yourselves informed about our activities.

This blog has been on our desk for nearly 6 months, but with so much happening, it just kept getting pushed back. So, with 2011 now upon us, we decided to take the plunge and get this up and running.

So, from now on, we intend to post on our “Latest News Blog”, any news of our designs and happenings, as well as anything else that may be of interest to our followers and supporters.

Regards

Mark and Debbie

Boat Plans African Queen | Wow an inflatable I just might consider buying

Boat Plans African Queen

Dengue a serious problem in Hawaii, the sound of silver spoon babies crying in the night, and I cant say Im surprised anymore at heinous Republican hijinks but I do still wonder just how low can you go and sleep at night...

Yowza, finally someone has come up with a good use for inflatable technology!

Too bad it does not have anything to do with boats...

Canoe Boat Plans | GARCIA EXPLORATION 45 VERSUS COMET EXPLORER 46

Canoe Boat Plans

Two boats pointed to the same type of sailors but two very different boats even if sharing a kind of similar look. The Garcia is an aluminium centerboarder with almost all the ballast inside the boat, the Comet is a swing keel boat with all ballast on the keel. Both have a cutter rig.

This gives Garcia an advantage in what regards simplicity and  Comet a clear advantage in what regards performance: For the same RM the Comet will only need a percentage of the ballast that will be needed on the Garcia.

The Garcia is almost integrally built in Aluminium, the Comet is made of vinylester resins, Eglass and kevlar and carbon reinforcements, using an infusion process. The finality is giving max impact and compression resistance on critical areas. The boat has a sacrificial crash box at the bow and another one at the stern. The cabin can have a watertight door. Even with all the kevlar reinforcements in what regards resistance to impact I believe that the aluminium hull will be a better option.

Regarding dimensions (m, kg, m2, L): LOA:  G - 14.21; C - 13.99. LWL: G- 12.57; C - 13.97. Beam: G - 4.44; C - 4.50. Displacement: G - 14 100; C - 11 500. Draft: G - 1.14/2.90; C - 1.60/3.50. Ballast: G - 4300; C - 4800. Sail Area upwind: G - 91.0; C - 85.3 (with Jib) 116 (with Genoa). Engine: G - 55/75hp; C - 75hp. Tankage: G - Water 500; Diesel 700; C - Water 440; Diesel 680.

From the dimensions we can see that to a very close LOA and Beam correspond a bigger  LWL and ballast on the Comet. The max draft is also deeper but the really huge difference regards RM and almost for sure AVS and inverted stability. The Comet has more 500kg of ballast but most of all it has all that ballast on a keel wilt 3.5m, while the Garcia has most of it inside the boat, just a bit below  the water line. The difference of effectiveness of both ballasts is huge as the stability of both boats, not in what concerns overall stability, due to the Garcia bigger weight, but in what concerns the stability/weight ratio.

The Comet will not only be a much more powerful boat in what regards sailing as  it will have a better reserve stability and will recover much quickly from a knock out. The Garcia has the advantage of maintaining intact its stability with the centerboard up and that can be important regarding seaworthiness in extreme weather but probably the Comet with the keel up will have a similar stability to the one of Garcia.

It seems to me that the Garcia is a more specific yacht, pointed to voyages in extreme latitudes while the Comet will also be able to do that (even with a less resistant hull) but will be a more versatile sailboat with a much better sailing performance, a long range cruising boat with a big autonomy and seaworthiness.

Both boats can be sailed from the interior and have an all around view from the cabin and the rigging is designed to be used by a solo sailor.

The Comet  looked a lot worse on the first low quality drawings. On the new ones the boat looks a lot better and more elegant than the Garcia that,as I have already said, looks fat and too high to me. Not that I find the Comet particularly beautiful even if I like the hull.

Boat Plans Pdf | GITANA OPEN 60 ON FOILS BEAUTIFULL

Boat Plans Pdf

I am convinced: the foils do work even on very nasty weather and the Open 60s (IMOCA) continue to lead in what regards significant technological monohull advances as they have been doing for some decades. Just beautiful the movie, some of this years best sailing footage.

Boden Boat Plans Australia | an opportunity and its FREE

Boden Boat Plans Australia

Some needful reading, does sixty-days seem a little light for stealing $230K, and in the "modern fascist movement driven almost entirely by racism, stupidity, and xenophobia" department...

I wont go into the many and varied reasons that it makes sense for folks sailing boats to have at least a working knowledge of basic navigation skills and that includes celestial.

Yeah, yeah I know Im a Luddite dinosaur.

On the other hand, if you happen to feel that learning how to navigate your boat without the aid of prone to failure electronic systems and devices that you can neither repair or fix youre in luck. Vanderbilt University has an online class (thats FREE!) and looks to be very good.

Hard to argue with free.

Wooden Boat Plans Australia | VISMARA V56 just beautiful

Wooden Boat Plans Australia

Vismara and the NA Mark Mills have done it again, what a beauty!!! After the much more sportive V65 :
 http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/09/vismara-v47-vismara-mills-62.html
a smaller performance cruising one. It is a pleasure to see Mark Mills, after having designed some of the fastest IRC racers around, designing big cruising yachts :-)

The boat is relatively beamy (5m), has a dingy garage, integrated solar panels, a moderated draft (2.5m) and it can have the boom control on an arch , that is also a permanent "bimini" or having a traditional cockpit system. It is made of carbon/epoxy sandwich and it is light (14 000kg) and will be certainly very fast.

The design program, for a owner that is a very experienced sailor, was for a blue water cruiser able to sail in very light winds built with tested solutions and made with the best materials : My kind of program ;-)

The winches are near the wheels allowing for solo sailing and it comes with a cutter configuration for easier control. No drawings yet from the interior (Lucio Micheletti) but if a very sportive boat like the V65 has a very nice cruising interior I am really curious to see this one.

Boat Plans Bateau | An improved winch

Boat Plans Bateau

An interesting read that involves a speedboat, some very scary reading, and have you ever wondered about the average IQ of some folks into guns...

On "So It Goes" we have some Barlow winches (a pair of 24s and 26s) which are as old as the boat... Considering that they are at least 46-years old, still working finestkind, and looking like theyre up for another 46 years, I dont actually pay much attention to the state-of-the-art of new winches. That said, these winches from Pontus are really interesting.

Small Boat Plans And Kits | DJANGO 9 80

Small Boat Plans And Kits

Maree Haute, Django 9.80 builder started doing mini racers, back in 2003 and they still make a racing one, the D2V2; then  they made a small cruiser based on the mini racer, the Django 6.70, then a slightly bigger version, the 7.70 (there is one circumnavigating) and now the big brother, the 9.80 that will be followed by a bigger one  the 12.70.
All boats are designed by Pierre Roland, are very sportive, well built, using infusion techniques. They have already built around 100 boats from all the types, a remarkable number for such particular boats.

The 9.80 is an oceanic boat with lots of interior space, lots of light, a good standing height (1.90m) with an interior that being very functional is quite basic and spartan. I kind of like it. A boat that points to the ones that like sailing more than interior comfort.

The hull is based on the solo racers hull concept, it is beamy (3.60m) with all beam pulled back, light 3.2/3.4T, depending on the keel configuration, that can assume three forms: Twin keel (1.55m with 1350kg of ballast), torpedo keel (1.95m with 1150kg of ballast) and swing keel with all ballast on the keel (1.10/2.40m with 1150kg of ballast).

A considerable ballast for these types of keels and a big hull form stability gives a very stiff boat with a  sail area to match, a big one, with 40m2 on the mainsail, a 32m2 genoa and a gennaker with 92m2. Thats a fast boat for sure. The price starts at about 133 000 euros for a boat equipped, without taxes.

The Django 9.80 was already tested by Voiles magazine on a comparative test, both boats at the water at the same time, with the Azuree 33, a boat with the same type of hull but more heavy, with a much more comfortable cruising interior and also a bit more expensive. The Azuree 33 is a fast boat but the Django 9.80 is faster even if the version tested was the twin keel (the slightly slower one):

Upwind with 22k of wind and waves the boats dont pound, both make 45ยบ real, the Azuree goes at 6.5k, the Django just a bit faster. Both boats are very easy to control and very stable. On a beam reach the Django lighter weight rules and the boat goes at 8.5K while the azuree makes "only" 7.5K. Downwind the Django goes at 10K surfing to 12K while the Azuree never made more than 9.2K.

With medium lighter winds the difference between the two boats was smaller going both around 8k downwind, with the Django going just a little bit faster. Testing the Azuree with the Django is quite unfair to the Azuree that it is considerably heavier (5.2T) even so the Azuree did good and if tested with the Oceanis 35 I bet that it would be considerably faster.

The Django 9.80 is a very interesting boat, not expensive considering what it offers and a good proposition to the ones that like sailing as much as cruising and dream with solo or duo Ocean passages on a small and fast boat.
