Yacht Boat Plans | BARCELONA WORLD RACE GREAT NEWS

And the good news is that we have a race not between two boats, as I feared, but between 4 boats. Surprisingly, at least for me, besides Stamm/Le Cam, Alex/Ribes there are two more competitive boats and teams. Not only Altadill/Munõz but Corbella/Marín are among the first. Corbella/Marín are leading at this moment. A Race that risked to be boring has been a very interesting one.
Also bad news, it seems to me that the boat of Riechers/Audigane is not able to follow the  leading group. They spent a lot of money and time trying to make it a competitive boat for the next Vendee Globe but it does not seem that they have managed.
A very nice movie about last edition and the crews on this one.

Boat Plans Wood | Our new Latest News Blog

G’day to all and welcome,

I am new to “blogging”, so this may take some time to start running properly.

Our new blog is replacing the “Latest News” section within our website. With so many build updates coming through, along with “New Designs Coming” and other such projects, our latest news blog is a great way to keep the world informed about what we and our clients are doing in reagards to building their boats and launchings.

I guess that we have been lucky that so many people are prepared to dig deep in our website to look for what is new and we are thankful to all of you for doing that to keep yourselves informed about our activities.

This blog has been on our desk for nearly 6 months, but with so much happening, it just kept getting pushed back. So, with 2011 now upon us, we decided to take the plunge and get this up and running.

So, from now on, we intend to post on our “Latest News Blog”, any news of our designs and happenings, as well as anything else that may be of interest to our followers and supporters.

After the use of the System on Wild Oats the max yacht that won the last Sydney Hobart, contrary to what could be expected, there was not a rush to use the system. My impression is that the system will only work well on small boats on flat water and need by yachts to be able to perform adequately on Ocean conditions. Small boats have just to much pitch to make its use profitable.

For the ones that never heard about it is just a wing that goes perpendicularly to the boat hull, near the surface, on the opposite side of the wind and  that like an airplane wing provides lift creating RM and pushing the boat up, preventing it to heel. Its efficiency increases with speed. Look at this movie and you will understand how it works:

Recently there have been a lot of interest about it, since 15 October, when it was decided that contrary to the masts and keels, the appendices would remain free on the IMOCA class (Open 60s), with the already existent limitation of a maximum of 5 movable ones. There are several teams considering using DSS on their boats and even some interesting designs:
Hugh Welbourn, the system inventor and developer is working with several teams and even if for me the limitation of the 5 foils (two rudders, a keel and two daggerboards) make the utilization of the system complicated, he presents several solutions. Eventually there are two more that it seems not to have been considered: With a narrower boat the utilization of a single deep rudder that would allow an independent DSS system or a movable rudder, from one side of the boat to another, that would make possible the actual beamy configuration and again an independent DSS system.

But what have been studied  by now is a configuration that maintaining the two rudders as they are, modifying the movable foils that assume a double role:  Given grip to the boat upwind and creating lift. The drawing makes sense but the foil could not be completely raised out of the water and, as I see it, will create drag on light wind sailing. I am very curious and hoping any of the new boats will go for that, to see the real system potential and if the advantages will be superior to the disadvantages.

Another disadvantage, that has nothing to do with performance, but will be a practical inconvenient, is the impossibility to put the boat along a quay or pontoon. The boat can not go alongside but stay at some distance, with the foil hitting the quay. It will need some BIG fenders LOL.

Hugh Welbourn and Dynamic Stability Systems Founder Gordon Kay says about all this:

"Dynamic Stability Systems welcomes this week’s decision by IMOCA to place no further restrictions on its class rule. This permits both the six new IMOCA 60s currently under construction, as well as the existing fleet, to be fitted with the lateral lifting foils which DSS has spent the last decade pioneering. ...



“These foils will allow IMOCA 60s to remain cutting edge as well as providing a performance enhancement every bit as significant as canting keels, which IMOCA pioneered during the 1990s,” ...

..Fitting DSS to a typical IMOCA 60 is complicated by the class rules which restrict boats to a maximum of five movable appendages – typically two rudders, a canting keel and two daggerboards.

The daggerboards are necessary to prevent leeway when the keel is canted, but on recent IMOCA 60s they have had a dual function as by being inclined in the hull is such a way that they are angled (ie off vertical) as they pass through the water, they also produce upwards lift. This lift helps reduce hull drag, but – most significantly – as it does not operate to leeward of the hull, it lacks the same lever arm and, in turn, the massive contribution to righting moment of the DSS foil. So while present generation IMOCA 60 boards make little contribution to righting moment, for their new boats teams have been investigating the use of more efficient L-shaped foils. With these one side of the foil prevents leeway while the other creates vertical lift down to leeward, in turn providing a massive boost to righting moment.

Teams have been looking at principally two configurations for these ‘DSS L-foils’:

a) Tip up: This is similar to a conventional daggerboard only its main shaft is vertical in the water when the boat is heeled, while its tip is effectively a DSS foil, close to horizontal in the water when the boat is heeled, to provide vertical lift.

b) Tip down: This is closer to the standard DSS arrangement where the main shaft of the foil protrudes horizontally through the bottom of the topsides providing vertical lift to leeward, while the downward-pointing tip of the board prevents leeway.

Welbourn, who is currently working with IMOCA teams on evolving this technology, says that while DSS is in the process of being accepted by the Class (just as canting keels were in the 1990s), the first designs to incorporate the DSS L-foils will be ‘middle of the road’ options, still retaining most of the familiar IMOCA 60 features. Thus rather than having the maximum permitted beam of 5.85m, he believes that new DSS L-foil equipped IMOCA 60s will end up closer to 4.8-5.2m....

According to Hugh Welbourn, an IMOCA 60 that relied even more on its DSS foil for righting moment would be an entirely different animal but unlike most innovations could represent further cost savings for the Class. The canting keel – along with all its added weight and complexity – could be dispensed with in favour of a simpler fixed keel and as a result there would be no need for additional daggerboards to prevent leeway as the keel foil could provide this (as it does on most yachts). Windward performance could be enhanced by fitting a trim tab to the keel, which is permitted for fixed keels under the present IMOCA rule. This would also allow conventional, straight lateral DSS foils to be fitted, which would be more efficient as their sole functions would be to provide vertical lift and increase righting moment.

Added reliance on the DSS foil would also result in less need for form stability derived from a beamy hull shape and Welbourn envisages the maximum beam of the ‘Ultimate’ DSS IMOCA 60 could be as small as 4.2m – at present the beam constraint is the shroud base required for the newly introduced one design mast, which has a specified size and weight.

A pure-DSS hull shape would also not require the fat bow that features in many modern offshore race boat designs to prevent nose diving when sailing downwind. “When you start supporting a lot of the boat’s displacement on the foil rather than the hull, what you need is something that penetrates waves very nicely at high speed, not a big fat bow. A slimmer type of boat does that,” states Welbourn.

The end result would weigh approximately 6 tonnes, almost two tonnes less than the present lightest IMOCA 60s. And once again, a substantially narrower and lighter boat, with a fixed, rather than a canting, keel and with straight foils, as opposed to L-shaped ones, can all result in a less expensive boat...


DSS foils or L-foils can also ‘turbo’ the performance of older generation IMOCA 60s. Retrofitting this to an existing boat would cost in the order of £50,000 maintains Welbourn. However this represents good value given that his simulations demonstrate they could take as much as five days off a round the world course compared to the same boat without the new foils.

Welbourn concludes: “Ultimately DSS is a way of producing more sea-kindly and safer boats, which are substantially faster for a negligible increase in cost and potentially with a reduction in cost. Almost all the daggerboards ever fitted to IMOCA 60s provide some degree of vertical lift depending upon their inclination in the boat. DSS foils are simply inclined much more and you get a lot more out of them.”

Thats the start of the biggest solo Transat and probably the biggest of them all and the weather could not be more interesting: They are pointing to stormy seas and F8 seas. Some of the big monohulls are already reefed while the smaller 50 multihulls go with all sail out. I love those guys, the craziest on the race, the ones that take more risks and the more spectacular. Off course the Open 60 go with full sail as the Class 40 and i bet they want some bad weather ahead as a way to give them a chance to fight the multihulls, not the bigger ones (that are bigger then their monohulls) but the 50fters that are a bit smaller.

Boat Blind Plans | FASTNET 1979 AND THE GRIMALKIN TRAGEDY

I had posted about it on the old thread but I saw the movie again (BBC) and decided that it has to be here. It is one of the best sailing movies ever. I will post also a very interesting movie with Nick Ward and the one that saved him form Grimalkin. Nick published a book with the story. Curiously the skippers son and also part of the Grimalkins crew, Mattew Sheahan (then with 17) is a prominent tester and Journalist for Yachting World Magazine. After a life racing sailboats he likes a lot what he calls the "Pogo factor" and has been responsible, among the rather conservative British nautical press, for a fresh  new look regarding cruising boats directed influenced by the racing solo racers.

Kayak Boat Plans | ARCTIC SAILING

Just three beautiful movies on three different sailboats, two that we would expect to see on this waters, a Boreal 44 and a Garcia 45 and small 30ft Bavaria circumnavigating Svalbard,  the lonely Island near North Pole. Thats my favorite: A bear attacked their dinghy. Fortunately they were not there and happily for us they filmed the action but I wonder how they manage to get back aboard LOL.

After so many enquires regarding the Roguewave XT-15 asking could it be downsized to a 14 fter instead, we’ve now revamped the design and the Roguewave XT-14 plans are now available.

Overall, the concept is the same except we’ve reduced the size of the forward casting deck in order to open up the size of the cockpit in the midship area.

The Roguewave XT-14 is a garvey vee hull, providing a clean and efficient hull shape with features and functionality typically only found in larger boats, With her wide shallow vee hull, this allows for large deck area, great stability at slow speed and smooth fast runs in choppy seas.

"CE" & the Australian Builders Plate (ABP) 

During the past week, a company approached us who are wanting to import boats from overseas to measure and calculate the Australian Builder Plates compliance numbers for their boats.

With 6 boats already in storage, the client bought the first one up to Bundaberg and parked it in our shed. He mentioned that the boats were already CE certified for the European markets, showing us the documentation etc and asked could we use the information provided on the CE plates.

Looking over the boat and the CE documentation and being that the boat was manufactured in China, a few of the numbers didn’t quite add up. So I suggested that we re-check the boat and recalculate to AS1799 as I was a bit suspicions about the CE plate

For those who are wondering what “CE” stands for :??
CE marking is a key indicator of a product’s compliance with EU legislation and enables the free movement of products within the European market. By affixing the CE marking on a product, a manufacturer is declaring, on her sole responsibility, conformity with all of the legal requirements to achieve CE marking and therefore ensuring validity for that product to be sold throughout the European Economic Area.

Some products have a CE symbol that has been alleged to stand for China Export or China Electronics and is confusingly very similar to the E.U.s CE mark. The two letters are close together, not spaced as in the European conformance mark.

Some products may be conforming but not displaying the logotype correctly and others may illegally put the correct mark on non-conforming items, or on an item without the required accompanying certificate of conformity.




In this case the boat had a plate similar to the European CE plate, giving the impression that the boat was legal and certified to the European markets. In other words, if you not aware of what to look for, you can get caught out.

After measuring the boat and doing a bit of number crunching and stability calcs, the boat as it stood with the so called “CE” certification didn’t comply with any standards. So, with this in mind and after a discussion with the client, we opted to recalculate to to the AS1799 standard. This means now that overall, he can sleep at nights knowing that his boats actually comply to a standard and most importantly by being a business, won’t cope a $25,000 fine if audited by the Marine Safety Authorities. So with this now done, we look forward to working with Paul in regards to the rest of his boats.

Well I’ve nearly finished the mods, a bit more sanding then it’s ready for painting – planning to repaint the bottom of boat to match it all up. It’s a nice walk through now and I’m very happy with it.


The seat top that was cut out became the ramp up to the floor. The pics probably don’t do justice as to how much standing room there is now, but it’s a good size and certainly provides a great platform to fish from.


Next mods – hopefully forward steering??

Next Design coming:
Weve been approached by Dajuane from Florida USA to design a Flats Microskiff for fishing the Florida Keys and surrounding waters. 
Microskiffs typically run in very shallow water and are narrow enough so that you can manovure yourself either by motor or poling through the mangroves and narrow channels.
He writes:
 My fishing style is typical for a Florida fly fisherman in the microskiff community. I fish 40% of my time solo with a fly rod from the bow while using a small trolling motor or short push pole from the bow. Most of the time, the water where I fish solo is 2 to 4 feet deep. 50% percent of the time I will be fishing with one other person. In that situation one person is on the poling platform pushing and maneuvering the boat with a 19-21 foot long carbon fiber push pole. The other person is on the bow casting a fly rod. That is the ideal fish stalking situation.
       

It typically occurs in water ranging from 1-3 foot deep. Sometimes even shallower if the red fish get into the grass flats during high tide. 5% of the time I will have a total of 3 people on the boat including myself. The two other people will be seated and will cast off the sides of the boat and fish “old man” style. The other 5% of the time the boat will be beached and I’ll be fishing from shore, using the boat only to get to my location.
Although I do most of my fishing in brackish water shallows I do have to cross open water too from time to time. Our conditions here in the Mosquito lagoon are not like the bays you have there. Water is typically 4-8 feet deep and 14 foot at the channels. Waves are short and choppy. When the wind is up (30 km/h) the waves get very choppy but remain short (just barely white capping by most standards) but the period between waves is very short due to the shallow water.

There are a lot of flat bottom boats in use around here. I do not want a flat bottom boat. I don’t want to pound too much. I think a little vee will be needed. No more than 10 degrees I guess because it still has to perform well in the shallows. I prefer a flared hull rather than a slab sided one because as you know, with slab sides in the first 1/2 of the hull, you are in for a wet ride. I want to remain fairly dry even for a small boat.

For ease of construction and storage I prefer a boat less than 60 inches wide. 54” to 56” is ideal at the deck and 48” at the water line I think. A boat with that displacement will run fine with a 20-25hp I think. I do not want to buy anything over 25hp. Also, this boat will be towed by a small Subaru. You will find that many fly fishermen here in Florida have switched to smaller boats and smaller cars. This is a good reason why the www.microskiff.com site is becoming popular here. A 16 footer fits nicely into my Garage or any other typical American garage. A 18 footer will require a hinged tongue trailer and being stored at a slight angle. Although a 18 footer will track better while being poled, building one will require personal inspection by FWC in order to get registration.

Here in Florida any home built watercraft over 16 foot must be inspected by FWC. Less than 16 foot watercraft do not need to be inspected. So I’m not sure if the two extra feet are really worth it. You will find that ANYTHING you design for the American Market should be available in two sizes. One less than 16 and one over 16 but slightly less than 18 foot. As for fit and finish. I am searching for a fishing boat with a great performing hull. I don’t care for a yacht finish. I want a durable boat that is light, simple to build, and possesses a great hull that is quiet is the shallows, doesn’t slap much in light chop or quartering winds, and is reasonable stable for it’s size. I like fully decked boats but I’m open to bench seats as long as there is a built in casting deck up front. I know stability is in the eye of the beholder but I think we here in Florida are used to boats that are much less stable that what you consider reasonably stable. I guess this is probably because we have wimpy waves here in our local water. What people call 2 foot chop here you might call a 10 inch roller.

There be bigots assholes in Dent County Missouri, just some welfare for rich folks, and Im not quite sure the military and I share the same definition of the word humane...

Ive never been a big fan of carrying around a lot of pyrotechnics as things designed to explode/burn on a boat just make me nervous. A feeling underlined over the years by a too large number of incidents where flares became part of the problem rather than the solution.

Truth be told, flares scare me.

Then theres the ongoing need to replace your flares every couple of years... Yeah, I know flares have a three year lifespan but, try as I may, whenever I find myself needing to buy flares I only seem to be able to find flares with eighteen months or so validity.

Have I mentioned that flares are silly expensive?

So, in the "its about frelling time" department...

... Finally an electric flare that is USCG approved (and yes I know it looks like a man-overboard light).

The good news is from here on this is the only night signal you need to carry and combined with a distress flag as your day signal (which comes with the Sirius flare) its all you need to be 100% street legal with the USCG and other powers that be.

But wait... It gets better!

The Sirius electric flare is not "dated" with an expiry date which means the only thing you need to replace is the c-cell batteries when needful. That said, if you lose or screw it up you can order a replacement and get it shipped to you by the US Mail or something similar.

Of course I saved the best for last... It only costs $99!
