The SportzMaster 19 had to be simple. It had to combine the comfort for those family outings, whether it be swimming, diving or just enjoying the day, but at the same time she also had to satisfy those who are into serious fishing and competition.


Not content though with being just another boat, where they all begin to look the same, the SportzMaster 19 also had to be different. With her flared bows and strong sheerline, she had to be tough and rugged, yet simple in her concept, yet all the while telling you of her purpose and nature.

Designed for seaworthiness, practicality and comfort. Whether it be a glassy sea or a grey horizon, she had to be designed to bring you and your family home safely, and in comfort.

Graham has sent in his latest build pictures of his SportzMaster 19 with the bottom plate all faired and primed, ready for painting! It wont be long now and hell be rolling it over to begin the internals.!? ??????

Hi Mark,

I put the final undercoat this morning tomorrow I will guide coat and bring it down to 240 grit and give the underside a top coat then I will flip it .

Apart from 8 wild bees playing havoc and sticking to the wet paint I think it will come up OK.

So far I have used 43 – 45 Litres of resin approximately 36 litres in the lay up and 7 – 8 litres in the bog.

In the layup I am using 420 – 430 gramms of resin per square metre of 456 gramm double bias matt.

Hi Mark.

I turned the boat over Sunday morning and then had unexpected visitors.

I left frames 3,5,7,9 and 11 and it ended up a bit weighty for 4 people 2 or 3 frames left in would have been ample.

It sat on the cradle perfectly I still have to fit the front frame that I left out to save lifting the boat over it.

The inside looks to be fairly easy to clean up for glassing I will soon find out.

Weve just recieved the lasted build pictures from Ken (Adelaide) of his Mushulu 14 !!

He writes:

The weather here was very kind over the weekend, so I managed to get the inside of the M14 glassed. Heads up for anyone using 450 glass on the inside, Ive used most of the resin & hardener now, so Ill have to get a couple more containers of each before I continue. Mark did tell me it would absorb more. Also took some pictures of it glassed & the inside of the seats.

The Mushulu 12, (a composite/ plywood design) is a  lightweight design, easily carried or handled by 1 to 2 people, quick and simple in its construction and without costing an arm and a leg to build.


Designed not only as a lightweight timber tinnie, it also meant it had to be a performer. Not only in recreational use, whether it be fishing or just plain exploring, but also as a tough and rugged tender if required as well. With higher than normal topsides of 457mm (18") instead of the typical 300mm (12"), it had to be designed to be used as a carrier of people and stores, water and fuel runs, or just plain recreational fishing.

Overall, the Mushulu 12 offers a great opportunity for those weekend fishing and camping adventures, reliable and seaworthy for those who live near the water.

Plywood Boat Plans | Australian Builders Plate

Plywood Boat Plans

How many times when webstalking the net looking for a boat to build, have we found a design, purchased plans and built the boat only to find that its not Australain Builders Plate compliant. Over the past 12 months, I had so many calls from people who have built a boat, where they purchased the plans from the US or other only to find that they cant register it or sell it.

Personally I find this interesting, as the crux of the ABP has been in since 2006, yet people still continue to purchase plans without understanding the registration requirements.

Here in QLD, you can register your boat without an ABP, but what happens is when you tick the box "No ABP", your registration application is suspended and you must forward it to MSQ (Maritime Safety Queensland)

On recieving your application, a MSQ officer will inspect your boat for safety and may even check it structurally and if satisfied, you boat will be registered. But he will NOT PROVIDE  the information for the ABP. The officer will then notified you that you can NEVER sell your boat without an ABP and if your do, you will be fined up to $5000. (This has already happened where a person sold his boat interstate on Ebay into NSW) In other words, you must find someone who can measure, calculate and provide the required information for your boat to sell it.
Check your state first and whats required 

Over the years, Ive seen many a builder hit a brick wall in regards to the ABP, where they try to contact the designer on forums, only to be totally ignored or unanswered or told its not their problem and they must contact someone within Australia. ,  So they decide to attempt it themselves, but without fully understanding the standard and its requirements, ends in total frustration resulting in "fudging" the figures as a way to get around the "problem"

Now, heres food for thought:

On the plate, its YOUR NAME that is etched on, not the designers. This means that YOUR RESPONSIBLE for the correct information. False information can result in a fine of up to $5000.
If your involved in an accident causing grevious bodily harm or death and your boat is found to be "non-compliant" ....the relevant authorities are going to slam you.

Its up to you what you decide to do, but for safety sake, dont fudge figures. The lives of your loved ones and friends arent worth the risk.

Overall, standards such as the ABP are becoming world wide, whether it be Europe/ Canada/ Brazil and many more. It is only the US where standards are not compulsary, nor is it followed. In other words..not ABP compliant.

So, no matter what you decide to build, youll need to look at what is supplied with the plans or, will the designer supply the required information for your boat. Many will not as Ive seen over time. So this leaves you with only one option. Find someone who can do the job for you.

Be aware though that the industry as a whole, Surveryors/ Nav archs etc, charge for ABP calculations approx $1200 - $2000. (pending the size of the boat)  In many cases, this can exceed the cost of  your boat in materials. !!

Like I said previously, what you do is up to you, but please do your homework first and more importantly...contact your states Maritime Authority so you know where you stand and whats required.

Yacht Boat Plans

Sams Sandy Strait 14 build;

"Ahoy there fellow boat builders (and lurkers) - Ive been a bit too absorbed in what Im doing to take a lot of pics, no helpers around as the rest of the family is still away on holidays. However theres an upside to that as you can see Im working in the large ,open plan kitchen/family/dining room. In airconditioned comfort :<) of course I wont be doing any sanding in here but at least I can glass the boat away from the high humidity outside. And yes Ive measured up the doorway to make sure I can get it outside again !
