Since getting into strip plank composite designs, weve had so many enquirys on
"How do you strip plank?"

The general perception out there is that it looks very complicated, especially for the first time builder. 

Well actually, its very, very easy!

Many of our clients have never built a boat before and using our method, are flying through their builds.

It was around 4 months ago that we decided to make these videos. One night whilst strip planking, I asked Debbie to grab the camera and said

"Lets have some fun and make a strip planking video. No rehersing or practice runs...just hit play and lets make it up as we go along."

So Debbie grabbed the camera, hit play and off we went. Crikey, I didnt know what I was going to say from one minute to the next !!

Well, after posting them on our forum, they were an outstanding success with many commenting how great they are and also how easy the process looks.  Sure theyre rough around the edges, but many have sinced used our build process after watching the videos a few times and then going out and duplicating the technique on their boats... with top results. Weve even got a few professional boatbuilders using our technique, whilst building our designs and commenting on just how easy it is!

No doubt, some of you have visited our Boatbuilding forum and not found the videos.
This is because the videos are only available to Members Only and not the general public. By joining our forum, you get full access to a greater range of topics and also access to these videos.

Boat Plans African Queen | Sams Sandy Strait 14

Boat Plans African Queen

Over the weekend, we recieved the lastet build pictures from Sam (NT)

He writes:
I made all the floors (ribs under the sole) from 6mm but then decided 9mm would be better. Also overdrilled and filled the screw holes for the hatch, and made spacers to raise the seat 30mm to allow more room for the hatch to open

Boat Plans Arch Davis | Stephens Sandy Strait 14

Boat Plans Arch Davis

Hi Mark.

Looking back over the photos of the build, it is a very satisfying bit of work. I cant wait to put her on a trailer and launch. I am now thinking of a 25HP merc. Walking around inside fitting bits and pieces it has a very solid feel, and I know the back end has some strength, because when I lifted and turned the boat over, its entire wieght was supported by the transom. Paint is many coats of Dulux oil based enamel bought very cheaply. Next build I will attempt to be much more systematic and neater with the filleting, as untidy fillets makes the interior look a bit shabby in places.

Also time and care on fairing is well worth it. The hardwood for the rubbing strake I sawed up and shaped by hand as I had some time to spare at that stage. Next project will have to wait until I get a large shed, as it is too frustrating waiting for consecutive fine days during a Melbourne winter.

 

Finally got the Sandy Strait into the water today. Here they are, pics of my first drive in a boat, in the first boat I have built! Lake Tyers, beautiful day. Goes really well!

Sams Sandy Strait 14 build;

"Ahoy there fellow boat builders (and lurkers) - Ive been a bit too absorbed in what Im doing to take a lot of pics, no helpers around as the rest of the family is still away on holidays. However theres an upside to that as you can see Im working in the large ,open plan kitchen/family/dining room. In airconditioned comfort :<) of course I wont be doing any sanding in here but at least I can glass the boat away from the high humidity outside. And yes Ive measured up the doorway to make sure I can get it outside again !

Sams Sandy Strait 14 build:

The Sandy Strait is back inside again...

Its taken me quite a while to finalize the size of the front seat/locker; I wanted it a bit bigger than in the plan but not too big. I need to be able to stand up to cast sometimes, i.e. when chasing tuna and long casts are handy. So after a lot of dry fitting and trimming here and there Im happy with it.

Ive still got to cut the sole and transom knee, then Ill fillet and tab all the bits in...

Sandy Strait 14 Description:

The brief for the Sandy Strait 14, (a composite/ plywood design) was for it to be based on the Mushulu 14, but with a different internal layout suited to the avid fisherman. It had to be lightweight for its size, easily handled by 2 people and quick and simple in its construction.  It had to have an overall beam of 6 ft (1.82m) and the freeboard  raised to 1ft-8in (508mm).  Overall, the Sandy Strait 14 had to be tough and rugged, simple in its design and construction and designed to be tough, reliable and seaworthy.
